A Crown of Stories: Inside Reine, the Debut Issue of Numen of Story

Johannesburg, 01 June 2026 — The inaugural issue of Numen of Story, titled Reine,” arrived not merely as a publishing debut, but as a statement of intent. The title, French for “queen,” signals a thematic concern with sovereignty, dignity and presence. Yet the authority suggested by Reine is not expressed through spectacle or grandeur. Instead, the issue proposes that the true sovereignty of story lies in the quiet yet enduring power of lived experience, imagination, and artistic expression. Through a rich gathering of voices and mediums, Reine sets the tone for what Numen of Story seeks to become: a platform where African creativity speaks in its many forms.

One of the most compelling aspects of the issue is its deliberate interdisciplinarity. Rather than restricting itself to a single artistic discipline, Reine moves confidently across forms such as visual art, poetry, fiction, photography, digital art and film. This breadth reflects a contemporary understanding of storytelling as something that cannot be confined to the written word alone. Images, textures and cinematic gestures all participate in narrative-making, expanding the possibilities of how stories can be told and experienced.

Across the issue, the works explore themes that feel both intimate and expansive: memory, belonging, migration, childhood, urban life and the layered histories embedded in place. Some contributions evoke personal reflection, while others gesture toward collective experience, reminding readers that storytelling often operates at the intersection of the private and the communal. What emerges is a mosaic of perspectives that capture the complexity of African identities and creative traditions.

The visual art and photography selections are particularly striking in their ability to translate narrative into image. These works document everyday moments, landscapes, and symbolic figures, inviting viewers to linger on details that might otherwise go unnoticed. In doing so, they reinforce one of the issue’s central insights: that the extraordinary frequently resides within the ordinary. The camera lens and the artist’s hand become tools for rediscovering overlooked histories and emotions.

At the same time, the literary contributions, poetry and prose alike, offer a contemplative counterpoint. Their language often moves with a lyrical attentiveness to memory and place, drawing readers into interior landscapes where identity is negotiated and reimagined. Together with the visual works, these texts contribute to an atmosphere of thoughtful exploration rather than definitive statement. Reine does not attempt to provide a singular narrative of African experience; instead, it presents a constellation of voices, each illuminating a different facet of cultural life.

In this sense, the broader significance of Numen of Story becomes clear. The journal positions itself within a growing movement to cultivate spaces where African artists and storytellers can engage across disciplines and geographies. By bringing together creators from different contexts, Numen of Story fosters dialogue that is both local and transnational, grounded in particular experiences yet open to wider conversations.

As a first issue, Reine is both a beginning and an invitation. It introduces readers to a community of artists whose work affirms the vitality of contemporary African storytelling, while also hinting at the possibilities that lie ahead for the journal. If sovereignty is the central metaphor of this issue, it is ultimately the sovereignty of imagination, the enduring capacity of story to shape how we see ourselves, our histories and our shared future.
